A disgruntled wife has been slammed for leaving a petty message for her waitress on a receipt.
The customer, believed to be from the US, was dining at a restaurant when she noticed the employee had referred to her husband as “sweetheart” when she was serving their table.
Upon paying the $A51 bill, the furious diner scrawled a message under the tip section of the receipt.

“Don’t call my husband sweetheart,” the note read.
A picture of the receipt in question was shared via online image sharing website Imgur by an anonymous patron.
“Well, it may be a tip but she’s just trying to make a living,” the caption read.

The post was viewed more than 70,000 times, with many taking particular issue with the wife’s behaviour.
“Jealous much?” one said.
Another suggested: “What an insecure b***h … Servers shouldn’t be held hostage by a******s like this woman.”
One joked: “Calm down Satan.”
While another quipped: “’How dare this waitress be nicer to my husband than I approve of’ – some heartless Karen.”
However, some jumped to the wife’s defence, with one saying: “Maybe she didn’t call the Mrs ‘sweetheart’ too? Because that would have been a pass in my book if it was just the waitress’ demeanour with everyone. But if someone was flirting with my husband I’d be annoyed too. We don’t know, we weren’t there.”
While another added: “Okay this is a d*** move but also I hate when strangers call me pet names like, ‘Sweetheart’.”
Meanwhile, one waitress shared her own experience after working in restaurants.
“I waitressed for a long time. What I learned is that women love being called, ‘Miss’, and men like being called, ‘Sir’,” she said.
“And when seniors try to order from the senior’s menu, request an ID … because ‘they look too young to order from that menu’ … and then wink. Works like a charm every time.”

The angry note comes just weeks after a restaurant worker discovered a customer had refused to give her a tip over a “rude” act.
The employee, from the US, was stunned to find an angry handwritten message left on a signed receipt after she waited a table for a couple.
The husband explained on the receipt that he wasn’t giving her any gratuity after he was furious with her for asking him and his wife whether they wanted to split the $A102 bill.
“No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks???” the message read.
The employee shared the receipt, along with the message, in a Reddit thread called “Mildly Infuriating”.
“He had the audacity to write this with my pen,” she said.
She said she never assumed the marital status of the couple because the man appeared in his late 50s to early 60s while his “wife” was “much younger”.

However, the waitress said she’s required to ask every customer whether they wanted a split bill due to her workplace’s policy.
“At my job we are supposed to ask if it’s separate checks, not assume they are together,” she said.
“We had a couple and some kids come in to eat once. The server brought out one check and the woman started freaking out because the server assumed that her and the man were still together.
“She was going on and on about how just because they look like a family doesn’t mean that they’re one check. That is why we ask because we want to prevent that situation from happening again.”
